PSHE
OUR ASPIRATION FOR EVERY LEARNER:
At Khalsa Primary School, personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education is an embedded part of our broad and balanced curriculum. Pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development is at the heart of our school ethos and permeates through many areas of the curriculum. The Fundamental British Values are promoted through the overarching aims and objectives of PSHE by supporting our children to become healthy and responsible members of society, as well as preparing them for life beyond school in modern Britain.
The aim of our PSHE curriculum is to deliver meaningful learning experiences, which are accessible to all and that will maximise the outcomes for every child so that they know more, remember more and understand more. At Khalsa Primary School, personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education enables our children to become healthy, independent and responsible members of a society. Additionally, it aims to help them to understand how they develop personally and socially, and tackle many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up.
We passionately believe in providing our children with opportunities for them to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse society in an ever-changing world. Our children are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community. Resilience plays a pivotal role in the development of our children’s lives and we nurture this by adopting a growth mindset at all times. The children at our school see mistakes as learning opportunities and we embrace these as much as achievements.
Focus on deepening pupils understanding:
Although PSHE is taught weekly through stand-alone lessons following the JIGSAW scheme, it underpins all assemblies and is woven through the whole school curriculum and ethos. In addition, it influences extra-curricular activities, focus days, visitors and trips. Central to our PSHE curriculum is pupil (and staff) wellbeing. As a community, we value creating strong attachments with our pupils; creating a safe and secure environment for learning is paramount. Activities that support wellbeing and mindfulness are featured heavily through our Jigsaw schemes of work and extra-curricular clubs.
Jigsaw is a whole-school approach and embodies a positive philosophy and creative teaching and learning activities to nurture children’s development as compassionate and well-rounded human beings as well as building their capacity to learn.
Jigsaw is a comprehensive PSHE Education programme (lesson plans and teaching resources) for the whole primary school from ages 3-11 grounded in sound psychology.
It has two main aims for all children:
• To build their capacity for learning
• To equip them for life
Jigsaw brings together PSHE Education, compulsory Relationships and Health Education, emotional literacy, mindfulness, social skills and spiritual development. It is designed as a whole school approach, with all year groups working on the same theme (Puzzle) at the same time at their own level. There are six Puzzles (half-term units of work) and each year group is taught one lesson per week. All lessons are delivered in an age- and stage-appropriate way so that they meet children’s needs.
There are six units over the year:
Autumn One | Being me in My World |
Autumn Two | Celebrating Differences (including anti-bullying) |
Spring One | Dreams and Goals |
Spring Two | Healthy Me |
Summer One | Relationships |
Summer Two | Changing me |
Each unit has two learning intentions: one based on the PSHE learning from the non-statutory framework for PSHE and one is based on emotional literacy and social skills. Every unit contributes to spiritual, moral, social and cultural development and is planned across the curriculum.
WHAT WE DO TO ACHIEVE OUR ASPIRATIONS:
At Khalsa Primary, we teach our children about topics within PSHE in the Early Years, this is planned from the Development Matters guidance.
Each term we have an overarching subject that we use to cover all aspects of PSHE. Our planning helps to support our curriculum intent. We intend t
We implement our PSHE curriculum throughout everything we do at Khalsa Primary, teaching PSHE at least once per week as an explicit lesson. Many of our assemblies are based around a PSHE theme. Outside agencies, through a carefully mapped planning system, are invited into school to support the implementation of our teaching programme.
WHAT WE DO TO MEASURE OUR SUCCESS:
At Khalsa primary, our spiral PSHE curriculum and wider provision will ensure that children will be equipped to support their decision making in regards to their wellbeing, health and relationships.
Our embedded whole school vision to nurture children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural development supports them to foster good relationships between all in line with the protected characteristics under the Equality Act 2010.
Our spiral curriculum allows children to build upon their understanding of British Values in an age-appropriate way, in order for them to become positive citizens in a forever changing community and ultimately preparing them for life and work in modern Britain.
By the end of each key stage, children will have had the opportunities to meet the end of key stage statements in line with the statutory guidance outlined in the Relationships Education, Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) and Health Education.
