Communication and Language

This month in Nursery children have been looking at different traditional tales. We read the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. In Nursery we created a small world tuff spot which included puppets and different materials related to the story. Our children loved to role play and narrate the story out loud using the props where they said certain phrases from the story out loud such as “This porridge is too hot. This porridge is too cold. This porridge is just right”. Some children were even able to change their voices to match the different characters from the story!

Exploring Media and Materials

This month we made different size bears using natural objects. We looked carefully at what a bear looks like and the different features of a bear then using natural objects such as acorns, pinecones, pebbles, stones and twigs we used our creative skills to create models of what we felt a bear looked like. We thought carefully about what natural objects would represent different parts of a bear, what colours to use, what size objects to place and where to position the different objects. We also looked at the different colours, shapes and texture of the different natural objects when creating our bears.

Literacy

This month we looked at the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. We were able to listen carefully to the story and name the different characters from the story. Whilst reading the story, we pointed to the front cover, back cover, spine and title of the story. We then went off to draw our favourite part of the story such as walking through the woods, the bear’s house, Goldilocks running away etc. Whilst drawing our favourite part of the story we learnt how to hold a pencil correctly and the amount of pressure to put from pencil onto paper when taking part in writing activities.

Maths

This month in Nursery we have been learning to count up to 10 and also recognise the number forms of numbers up to 10. We have been learning to match amounts of numbers such as colourful pom-pom balls to the correct number form. We have been also learning to check if the correct number of objects match the correct number form by moving objects one at a time and counting.

Personal, Social, Emotional Development

This month in Nursery we have been learning the importance of sharing toys and equipment with your friends. We have been taking part in a lot of games and activities which involve group work such as Dominos. Our children have learnt how important sharing and taking turns is in order for activities and games to be more fun and exciting. We have also been learning to use words such as ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ when taking part in group work activities. Well done, Nursery!

Physical Development

This month our children have been celebrating Chinese New Year and as part of this celebration our Nursery children have been looking at certain traditions that take place during this celebration such as The Dragon dance and using chop sticks. In Nursery, our children have been learning to use one-handed writing tools such as paint brushes to write letters in Chinese. Our children loved to use paint brushes to form letters in red glitter! We learnt how to hold and move our hands using one-handed to form numbers in Chinese.

Understanding the World

This month our children in Nursery have been reading the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears in class. We named the different characters from the story and were able to talk in-depth about what we might find in the woods. As part of our learning, we went to the Food Tech room and made yummy Bear Toasts! We learnt the different ingredients and equipment we need to make our Bear Toasts and how we should behave in different environments such as what our rules are in the classroom and what our rules are in the Food Tech room.
