Communication and Language

Children in nursery this term have really enjoyed using the food technology room. Children were very excited about making shortbread biscuits. In nursery we talked about all the ingredients that we need to make the shortbread biscuits. We explained to our carpet partners what the steps were to make the biscuits in the correct sequence. We have demonstrated some excellent listening skills, as we listened to each part of the instruction carefully and carried out the required task. We were able to mix the sugar, flour and butter together showing good motor skills. We worked in small groups sharing and taking turns to mix. Children each had a turn at rolling out the dough and using the cutters to make their shortbread biscuits. We loved them so much they were yummy!

Expressive arts and design

As we explored our animal’s topic, we have been looking at animals around the world. We explored the polar regions and looked at penguins and polar bears. We looked at igloos and different homes around the world. To further embed this learning children, wear able to recreate these surroundings by exploring snow and jelly. In nursery we expose children to various experiences as we believe that messy play is extremely important for our children’s development. Adding jelly and snow together in a tray provides children with an exciting tactile and sensory experience that inspires their curiosity, allows them to explore the world around them and enhances their learning, language and creativity

Literacy

Children in nursery are getting great at learning their phonic sounds and particularly enjoying writing their red words independently. This month we have been looking at the different parts of a flower and some children have really enjoyed painting their own flowers. Children enjoy role playing and being the teacher, they point out the different parts of a flower and test each other. We encourage children in nursery to have relevant print in their environment, we have children looking at books all around the classroom, enjoying pictures and retelling parts of their favourite stories. Children enjoy making connections to things from their home life and talk about times when they watched films with animals at home with their families.

Mathematics

Children in nursery really enjoy getting busy with dinosaurs, they use the dinosaurs in role play as well as in their everyday learning. Children count out the dinosaurs and match the numeral to the correct number in the tray. They have to dig deep to find the correct number as it is hidden beneath the shredded paper. Children found this activity particularly enjoyable as they felt that they were being pirates searching for treasure, they enjoyed making pirate noises as they were looking for the correct number. Children found the dinosaurs and then lined them up in a line to see which one was the biggest, they counted how many dinosaurs they have altogether.

Physical Development

Children in nursery are demonstrating some brilliant fine motor skills, they are able to use a pair of scissors correctly as they cut along a dotted line. Children are beginning to understand the safety measures involved in holding sharp objects and always make sure they hold scissors facing down whilst walking around the table.
This month children in nursery have enjoyed taking part in our sports day. Children had lots of fun doing the potato and spoon race and especially loved the parachute obstacle course. We have been busy practising in our nursery garden at listening to instructions and going, over and under the obstacle course.

PSED

Our topic this term has been animals, we have been looking at all sorts of different animals. Children have especially enjoyed learning about jungle animals. In nursery we have used lots of puppets to retell stories and use in our role play areas. Children demonstrate friendly behaviour towards one another as they share resources appropriately and elaborate on each other’s ideas, adding more available resources to their imaginative stories.

This month the weather has been lovely and sunny, we have all enjoyed having our circle time outside and have valued what we all have to say. We are beginning to listen to other children as they talk and only ask questions once they have finished talking.

Understanding the World

This month we have been looking at animals. We have looked at where they live and talked about their habitats. In our classroom we have set up a mini jungle, children enjoy using natural and wooden resources to explore animals’ natural surroundings. These natural resources encourage our children to be creative and use their imagination. Children are beginning to develop good fine motor skills and are beginning to express their thoughts and ideas as they manipulate and explore them. Children are able to learn new words and put them into context, we have learnt animal names and also have been looking at their young.
