Exploring Media and Materials

This month in Nursery our lovely children have been focusing on doing a lot of observational drawings of insects and plants in the classroom. We have been looking at shapes and colour of insects and plants in class and in our environment such as the garden area. Our children in Nursery loved to draw caterpillars and butterflies based on our core text book called The Very Hungry Caterpillar. They looked at how to hold a pencil correctly and form circle shapes when drawing their caterpillar. We spoke about what colours are used for the caterpillar and butterfly from the story. Great work Nursery and amazing drawings!

Literacy

This month is Nursery we have been reading the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar in class. Our Nursery children loved to listen and join in with the story, talking about the beginning, middle and end of the story. They loved to act out the story using story props such as masks and puppets. Our Nursery children loved to read the story independently with their friends and enjoyed using the story puppets as part of reading and listening to the story. Whilst reading the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar our Nursery children loved to say key phrases and words from the story including names of food and days of the week. Very impressive Nursery!

Maths

This month in Nursery our focus in Maths has been number formation and counting to 10. Our Nursery children have been learning to hold writing tools correctly and to focus on writing numbers to 10 and beyond. Our Nursery children looked closely at the formation of numbers to 10 and some of our children looked at writing numbers 20! Whilst writing numbers to 20, our Nursery children are encouraged to read the numbers they have written aloud. Our Nursery children were able to focus on writing two-digit numbers and talk about which number comes first when writing up to 20. Amazing work Nursery!

Personal, Social, Emotional Development

This month in Reception we have been reading the story of The Gruffalo and we have been looking at the way the Gruffalo looks and how the different the Gruffalo looks compared to others around him. We looked in detail at how each of us look in terms of physical features and what our friends look like. We learnt the importance of being kind and nice to each other and not judging others for what they look like. We are all as one human race! We learnt about how quickly the animals in the story judged the Gruffalo for what he looked like without actually meeting him in person. We learnt the importance of making friends with every one regardless of the way that they appear to look.

Physical Development

This month in Nursery our children have been looking at singing a variety of songs related to insects and plants as part of the story The Very Hungry Caterpillar. The songs that our Nursery children loved to sing included Incey Wincy Spider and I am a little Lady Bug. They enjoyed joining in with different songs and making different dance moves with their hands and body. Our children enjoyed using different musical instruments when singing a variety of songs and loved to share their songs with the rest of the class during circle time or music time. Well done Nursery. Great singing voices!

Understanding the World

This month in Nursery we have been learning about the life cycle of a butterfly as part of our story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Our Nursery children were encouraged to use the terms caterpillar eggs, caterpillar, cocoon and butterfly when explaining the life cycle of a butterfly. Our Nursery children drew some very detailed drawings of the different development stages of a butterfly and were able to draw the pictures in the correct order. Great work Nursery!
