This month in nursery we have been busy exploring the outdoor environment. We went for an autumnal walk in the garden area, we looked at the different leaves. Children talked about the different colour leaves and compared the different sized leaves. We then decided to create our very own garden inside our classroom, we collected sticks, conkers and leaves and decorated the tuff spot.
This term we have been focussing on different celebrations. We have looked at the Hindu festival of Diwali and read the Rama and Sita story. Children have been using puppets to act out the story and sequence the series of events. Children have been talking about their own experiences and enjoyed sharing stories of when they went to the Gurdwara for Bandi Chor Divas to light a candle. We have looked at the similarities and differences between the two festivals and talked about why they are both festivals of light. To further embed their learning children have made their own ‘diwa’ oil lamps and used different media and materials to decorate them. This month children have enjoyed going to watch the ‘Nishan Sahib’ being changed, as this month has been a very special month for Sikh’s around the world. Children enjoyed learning the 3 basic teachings of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. To allow children to be more aware of their community and the different people that live around us, we have been talking about different religions. In nursery we have been making comparisons between Sikhism and Islam. Children enjoyed looking at the different features of a Mosque and a Gurdwara, and talked about the things that make us the same and different.
In nursery children have been using pasta to make marks and look at different colours and patterns, we enjoyed following lines and making shapes with the pasta. We have also started to look at phonic sounds and looked around our classroom to find things beginning with the letter ‘m’.
This month children in nursery also dressed up for ‘Children In Need’, we all wore ‘odd socks’ for the day and raised some money for children’s charities all around the UK. We enjoyed looking at ‘Pudsey’ bear and used different colours and paints to decorate our classroom.
