Communication and Language

This month in nursery children have been looking at different celebrations. We read ‘Kippers birthday’ and children loved talking about what they do at birthday parties. In nursery we have created a role play area where we are celebrating Kippers birthday. We also enjoyed making our own playdough cupcakes, we made our very own birthday cupcakes for Kipper, we put candles on the cupcakes and loved counting out loud how old Kipper could be.

Exploring Media and Materials

This month we have carried on looking at the Indian artist called Bharti Kher who created an artwork called ‘Bindi. We used her inspiration to create our own pieces again but this time using more colours.

The children have also been enjoying music where they learnt a fireworks song during their music lesson.

As part of our Diwali topic we made some rangoli patterns using coloured chalk. Children talked about the colours they could see and the shapes they could spot. This month we also celebrated Children in Need, we enjoyed painting spots on our Pudsey bear headbands.

Literacy

We have been practicing our name writing, we have been writing on and in different materials. We experienced writing on paper with a pen and pencil, in sand, flour, jelly and even slime using our fingers and paint brushes. This has helped us improve our fine motor skills.

Maths

We have been learning to count and match numbers 1-6 we have used pom poms and numbers to match numbers to pom poms. We used our gross motor skills to draw 2D shapes in flour using paintbrushes.

Personal, Social, Emotional Development

This month children in nursery have really enjoyed talking about different festivals of light, in particular Diwali and Bandi Chorr Diwas. Children particularly enjoyed talking about the different fireworks that they did with their families, sharing their experiences with their peers. We loved making our own firework card using different coloured paint and glitter. We also learnt a fireworks song during our music lesson.

Physical Development

This month the children have been learning about Remembrance Day. They really enjoyed taking part in the 2 min silence in class and singing a beautiful prayer to remember those special individuals who gave up their life for others. Our children used a variety of creative tools and ingredients like a spoon, icing sugar, biscuits, red food colouring and a bowl to create their own poppy biscuits. Our children were able to follow along and around the shape of the poppy when cutting it out carefully. Our children looked closely at the shape and colour of the poppies before decorating their own poppies.

Understanding the World

This month, we have been looking at a variety of different celebrations. We looked in detail at how people celebrate birthday around the world, including their friends and family. They were able to role-play how they would celebrate a birthday party and also what they would need for a birthday party and they also made a birthday wish list.
