Welcome to Life at KPS for Year Nursery

Mrs Birring warmly welcome you to Nursery.

The aim of this page is to highlight some of the fantastic learning that has been happening in Nursery, this page will be updated monthly, with photographs and information about the learning we have completed during the month.

We hope you enjoy looking through these updates and do discuss your child’s learning with them to celebrate their success. We look forward to any suggestions you may have to make your child’s learning a pleasant experience.

Communication & Language

This term in nursery we have been reading ‘Brown bear, brown bear, what do you see?’ By Eric Carle, to further embed their learning, nursery children have had a ‘teddy bear’ picnic. Children were very excited to bring in their favourite teddies.

We introduced our teddies to the class and talked about why the teddy is special to us.

Exploring Media and Materials

Children in nursery are experimenting with colours, we enjoy using different media and materials to create marks.

We are using potatoes to print using different colours. Children in nursery are exploring mixing colours.

Literacy

In nursery children are exploring different mark making opportunities. Children are making connections with their movements and the marks they make. Children use things of personal significance to mark make using gross motor skills.

In nursery children are starting to draw circles and lines, children are practising to trace over their name templates and are able to recognise their names.

Maths

Nursery children have been learning their colours and making a repeated pattern. We have done this using the peg board with large and small coloured pegs. We have also used beads to thread through laces to make a repeated pattern.

Children have also been learning basic 2D shapes. We have explored shapes by looking around the environment to recognise these shapes.

Panjabi

In Panjabi, Mrs Matharu has been teaching the children the names of all the different body parts. As part of the special celebrations for Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s 550th Gurpurab children have been learning shabads in Panjabi.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

We have continued to learn the daily nursery routine and are beginning to settle in. Children feel comfortable approaching adults to ask for help. Children are showing confidence as they explore the different areas within the nursery setting, and are beginning to interact with others and play alongside each other.

Some children are beginning to be more independent as they experiment with putting their straws in their own milk cartons, put on their own coats and hats on.

Physical Development

As part of the book ‘brown bear brown bear, what do you see?’ Nursery children have enjoyed making their very own sandwiches for the teddy bear picnic. Children used their fine motor skills to spread the butter on the bread and talk about what they like having in their sandwiches. With an adults help they made cucumber sandwiches.

Understanding the World

In nursery we enjoy taking part in role play, we imitate everyday actions and events from our own family life.

We are pretending to be at the Gurdwara and giving out prashad to everyone. We are learning about Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s three main teachings. We are talking about ‘Vand Chakna’, and learning to share our things.
