Welcome to Life at KPS for Year 1

Miss Owoaje and Mrs Richardson warmly welcome you to Year 1.

The aim of this page is to highlight some of the fantastic learning that has been happening in Year 1, this page will be updated monthly, with photographs and information about the learning we have completed during the month.

We hope you enjoy looking through these updates and do discuss your child’s learning with them to celebrate their success. We look forward to any suggestions you may have to make your child’s learning a pleasant experience.

What a packed, but fantastic month we have had in Year 1!

We have loved continuing our topic about Italy – this term we focused more on the history of the Colosseum. In English, we have been learning the story of Androcles and the Lion. This inspired us to write as if we were a gladiator entering the Colosseum to fight a lion! To support our writing, we staged our own arena in the contemplation zone. We took it in turns to hear how loud it was in the middle! We used our senses that we had learnt about last term to generate our sentence ideas, e.g. I can hear the noisy crowd! We were also visited by a Roman soldier, who told us all about life in Roman times and taught us all about the disgusting foods that Romans ate and how they would entertain themselves with battles. We dressed up as Romans for this day to help us get even more into character.

In RE, we have been learning about the Christmas story of how Jesus was born. We have been practicing some new songs in music, which retell the story of how the three wise men followed the star to find Jesus and that they brought him gold, frankincense and myrrh. We hope the parents enjoyed seeing the recorded video of our singing, alongside Year 2’s acting!

To practise our cooking skills this half term, we focused on shaping dough using a rolling pin. To keep things festive, we decided to bake gingerbread, which we decorated with sultanas. We enjoyed making this recipe and are learning to read the measurements and use the weighing scales with support.

We have had such a fantastic beginning of our Year 1 journey and can’t wait to make many more special memories next year. Happy new year!
