We have had a busy month in Year 1! In our first weeks, we focused a lot on our class bird, describing it and learning how it relates to our faith. Each class made painted hand prints and wrote qualities that we want to show this year. We then put together our handprints on display to look a bit like the feathers of a bird. We learnt about adjectives and wrote simple sentences to describe our bird.

We have enjoyed having our singing assembly back with Mrs. Stoker each week and it has been wonderful to visit the Gurdwara every day. We have missed doing things like this together in school.

We have now begun our whole school topic – Our Wonderful World. Year 1 are learning about Italy and the Colosseum. In geography, we have been drawing the Italian flag and learnt the order of the colors. We have started off our map knowledge with the United Kingdom, and will soon move on to looking at the map of Europe where we will locate the United Kingdom and Italy. In science, we are learning about our senses and have so far covered taste and hearing. We tasted a variety of Italian ingredients while blindfolded and describe the taste using adjectives. Surprisingly lots of us like capers! To use our sense of hearing, we went on a nature walk and recorded the number of times we heard different sounds. There are so many birds calling in our field!

In maths, we have been learning and securing our number bonds to 10 using ten-frames and part whole models.
