DT
We are enjoying our DT topic which is Sculpture. Our artist is Chris Gryder. He makes amazing tiles and we have been looking at how he might have designed the. We have used his ideas to design our own tiles. We have also been inspired by our topic Khalsa Cares for ideas for our own designs. All our designs show nature images just like Chris Gryder’s. For example we have oceans, rainforest or our school garden and animals that live in those habitats.
English
The children have remembered how to use time connectives like First, Next and Then in a recount about their half-term break. In Science, they have been introduced to new vocabulary to do with the environment, for e.g. greenhouse gases, drought, floods, solar energy etc. They have then been able to identify and match these pictorially aswell as use them in discussions to do with ‘Climate Change’. As maintaining the rainforest is a key factor in this campaign, the children have been asked to fill in a grid showing ‘what they already know’, ‘what they would like to know’ and at the end of the topic it will be ‘what they have learnt’ about the rainforests around the world.
Maths
The children have continued to recall and use addition and subtraction facts to 20 fluently, and derive and use related facts up to 100. They are beginning to learn to show that addition of two numbers can be done in any order (commutative) and subtraction of one number from another cannot. Aswell as this they have added and subtracted numbers using concrete objects, pictorial representations, and mentally, including: a two-digit number and ones; a two-digit number and tens; two two-digit numbers; adding three one-digit numbers.
Music
I have been very proud of the attitude of the students this term as some music restrictions are still in place.
Year 2 children have begun to read, follow and write simple rhythms. They have used beaters and percussion instruments to follow a simple notation. In addition, they have used the Kodaly method internalise rhythms.
They do this by saying:
Ta For a 1 beat note
Te Te for 2 half beat notes
Tikatika for 4 quarter beat notes
Panjabi
Year 2 we have been learning the first 2 sets of Panjabi letters, and their corresponding sounds. Children have been using these letters and their words beginning with these letters like (A AK, s sp,h hQ …). Children have also begun to make Mukta words with these letter sounds, furthermore, recognise which words we refer to as Mukta words. In this term we have also recapped our prior learning about the names of the body parts in Panjabi and functions of different body parts. This term they have also been learning about Guru Arjan Dev Ji and Guru Ji’s shahidi.
PE
This month in PE we have been practicing a range of athletics events. Children have learnt various sports such as the Javelin, Short distance sprint and the Relay race.
Children have learnt the importance of pacing themselves when running longer distances and the correct technique to throwing a javelin.
We plan to continue practicing more athletics events such as the Long jump and Standing high jump after the May half term.
PSHE
This month in PSHE we talked about feelings of loss. We all shared about something we once lost and how that made us feel. Using a book called Badger’s parting gifts helped us to understand this kind of feeling. Some of the children fondly talked about their family members who have passed away. We finished off by talking about special people in our lives, why they are special and how we can keep them in our mind’s eye. We also spent lots of time learning about internet safety. We covered things like not sharing passwords or personal information to strangers. We also talked about telling adults if people are unkind to them .
RE
This month we looked at the topic Community and belonging. We explored an inquiry question; Do Muslims only pray at the mosque? Watching a few videos and listening to different people talk about Muslim praying and rituals that include getting ready for prayer and important they are helped us to understand the process. We had an online tour of a Mosque. We saw different parts of a mosque. The different videos we watched showed us that Muslims do not only pray at the mosque but also pray at homes, school, work or airport as long as the place is clean. We finished off by designing our own prayer mats.
Science
The children have remembered how to use time connectives like First, Next and Then in a recount about their half-term break. Sikh Studies
In Sikh studies we had so much fun learning about Guru Har Rai Sahib Ji, the 7th Guru in the Sikh religion. We found out many interesting facts about him. We read a story about his encounter with a flower in his garden. From this story we also found out how he cared for plants, animals and other people. He used herbs to heal those who were unwell. We learnt the importance of being kind to others and to those who are weak. His story inspired us to also look after our school garden and learn about the benefits of herbs.
