Art
Children in Year 2 have been applying all the art skills they have learnt throughout the year to create their own pictures, using paint and pencils. Children have been excited to use the Great Fire of London topic to draw houses that are on fire. We have been mixing colours together to create our versions of oranges, reds and yellows.

English
The children have been introduced to the Great Fire of London this term. We read the story Vlad and the Great fire of London which detailed the main events. They then answered key questions explaining how the fire started, where it began, how far it spread and the results of the fire. To conceptualise the period in history, the children compared pictures of modern-day London to 17th Century London. Later, we sequenced a timeline to show the order of events and how long the fire had continued for in London.

Maths
Using the context of “Sherlock Cones – shape detective”, the children identified shapes, including various quadrilaterals, based on clues about their properties. During the lessons, they had been introduced to the new concepts of right angles and lines of symmetry. Later they explored the properties of 3-D shapes that were introduced in Year 1 through building structures and using vocabulary such as vertices, faces, edges and apex. They then applied their knowledge of 2-D shapes to describe the faces of 3-D shapes in more detail. For example, ‘this is a triangular prism because it has 3 rectangular faces and 2 triangular faces.
Music
This month year twos have been learning about pitch and rhythm.
They have been playing practical games, passing a ball around a circle in time to a pulse beat and reading and playing different rhythms, written on the ball, if it lands on them.
This has helped their concentration, co-ordination and teamwork.
In addition, we have started learning songs about the Great Fire of London to support their History topic.
Panjabi
In Year 2 we have been learning the first 4 sets of Panjabi letters, and their corresponding sounds. Children have been using these letters and their words beginning with these letters like (A AK, s sp,h hQ …). Children have also begun to make words with kanna symbol land try to write their own words as well. In this term we have also recapped our prior learning about the names of different clothes in Panjabi and words about summer. This term they have also been learning about Guru Arjan Dev Ji and Guru Ji’s shahidi.
Physical Education
The year 2 children had a fantastic Sports Day! The sun was shining and everyone had a brilliant time competing in lots of different races such as sprinting races, pushchair race, parachute race, bean bag race, dribbling race (with a football!) race, space hoppers race and the sack race.
They also learnt about why it is important to exercise and warm up our bodies before taking part in exercise. They showed excellent sporting characteristics of giving it a go, working as a team and supporting their friends. You all did amazing, well done!
PSHE
This month in PSHE children have been talking about feelings of loss. The last few months have not been easy for any of us especially the children. During circle time we have talked about something
something we once lost and how that made us feel. Using a book called Badger’s parting gifts helped us to understand this kind of feeling. Some children shared their feelings about losing someone they cared about and how it made them feel. We finished off by talking about special people in our lives, why they are special and how we can keep them in our mind’s eye.
Religious Education
This month we looked at the topic Community and belonging. We explored an inquiry question; Do Muslims only pray at the mosque? Watching a few videos and listening to different people talk about Muslim praying and rituals that include getting ready for prayer and important they are helped us to understand the process. We had an online tour of a Mosque. We saw different parts of a mosque. The different videos we watched showed us that Muslims do not only pray at the mosque but also pray at homes, school, work or airport as long as the place is clean. We finished off by designing our own prayer mats.
Sikh Studies
Children have been doing their end of year assessment on Sikh Studies. They have been showing what they have learnt over the year in all the topics covered in Sikh Studies.
Children were given a chance to revise first by looking through their Sikh Studies book from work done since the start of the academic year in September.
After children will have then went through their papers to see their scores and marked papers. Then we went through the answers as a class so children can see what they got wrong and what the answers were.
