Art

In Art, the children have started to research about the Egyptian headdress including the materials, fabric and colours used to create a headdress.  They have answered questions such as who wore the headdress and why the headdress was worn.  The children are planning how they will create their own Egyptian headdresses using prints.  For example, how to choose the appropriate colours in order to create a vivid design, interesting patterns and carefully choosing appropriate print size to create the design.

History

Our topic for this term is Egyptians. The children have been researching facts about famous pyramids and Pharaohs from ancient Egypt. The children are beginning to understand the story of Egyptian Gods and how they are important to Egyptians. In lessons, the children also learnt about some of the famous pyramids such as Giza and the significance of it. They are also beginning to understand the reason for mummification in ancient Egyptian and how people lived in the past. This topic has given the opportunity for the children to compare their own lives and the lives of people who lived in ancient Egypt.

Maths

We have started to learn about the topic, ‘Changing Me’.  We have discussed where babies grow and develop and how it is the mother who carries the baby in her womb.  We then discussed the differences between babies and children.  We identified what we could do as a baby versus what we could do now as seven or eight-year-old children.  We have also discussed how the baby develops in the mother’s womb over a nine-month period.  We will continue to look at how our bodies change and adapt as we grow.

Music

Year 3 have been learning rounds with an ostinato (repeated pattern) called My Paddle’s Clean and Bright. In order to keep in time and feel the pulse beat , they have re-enacted a long boat, rowing in time and singing.

In addition , they have been revising how to read and write rhythms using Ta (crotchet) TeTe (two quavers) TikaTika (Four semi quavers) and a shh (rest)

Panjabi

We have been learning 5 sets of Panjabi letters and revising our previous knowledge by reading and writing Mukta words. We have also been beginning to construct new Panjabi words. Children are using the Panjabi alphabet sheet to allow them to make connections, furthermore, recognise familiar sounds to enable them to read and write Mukta words and words with different symbols. This term, children have also been learning about self-hygiene in Panjabi. For speaking and listening our main focus has been on directions. To make our learning interesting children have been using a variety of interactive resources such as flash cards and pictures. This term they have also been learning about Guru Arjan Dev Ji and Guru Ji’s shahidi.

Physical Education

This month we had our Sports Day!  Children competed against each other in races such as Hurdles, Sprint, Football Dribble, Bat and Ball, Sack race and Space hoppers.

Children raced in their families and collected points throughout the day, and the winning team with the most points was The Sky Gliders.  Well done to all the Reds!

We also had a picnic with the parents, parents races and a teachers race – which was won by our Year 3 teacher, Mrs Athwal!

In Science this month we have been learning about Light.  First, we looked at what different light sources and how we need light to see.  Next, we investigated transparent, translucent and opaque objects with our torches.  Finally, we have investigated how shadows are formed and how we can change the size of the shadow and make them darker.  We have conducted different investigations within our classroom using torches, different objects and materials.

Sikh Studies

Children have been doing their end of year assessment on Sikh Studies. They have been showing what they have learnt over the year in all the topics covered in Sikh Studies.

Children were given a chance to revise first by looking through their Sikh Studies book from work done since the start of the academic year in September.

After children will have then went through their papers to see their scores and marked papers. Then we will go through the answers as a class so children can see what they got wrong and what the answers were.
