Art and DT

In DT, we have completed our stone age cart wheels using our clay wheels, sticks and cardboard materials.  We chose our best wheels out of our first and second attempt and used them to connect them to the axles.  In our final product we used natural resources such as twigs, sticks and small branches from outside to make the cart.  We did this because we have been learning how people in the Stone Age era only had the natural world to help them build tools and transportation.

Computing

In computing, the children have been practising to use the Microsoft word document. In this term, they have been learning to copy and type short paragraphs correctly. They also learnt to change the font type and the font size. The children are beginning to understand how to make their work more presentable and engaging for the readers. Another skill the children are learning is to improve their typing skill. In this topic, the children also had the opportunities to carry out their own research and record their work by typing the information and present it to the classroom.

English

We continued with our Stone Age topic. Children have been learning to write a diary entry. They looked at examples of diary entries and discussed the features. In this topic, the children also learnt another Alan Peat sentence and include this in their extended writing piece. Children also started writing their drafts for their publishing work and looked at steps to success such as using expanded noun phrases to describe the sabre-toothed tiger and the setting, a wide range of conjunctions to extend their ideas and different punctuation to make the diary entry more interesting for their readers.

Food Technology

Keeping in theme of learning about Vaisakhi this term, we have learned how to make parshad!  We used three parts water to one-part sugar, one-part flour and one-part butter.  We learnt why parshad is given in Gurdwaras and how it is prepapred.  As we were making it, we made sure we recited Mool Mantar the same way JapJi Sahib is recited in the Gurdwara.  We made sure to have covered our heads and cleaned our hands thoroughly.  As we mixed, it was important to keep an eye on the mixture because it could easily get stuck to the pan!  Afterwards, we discussed what we could do better next time to make  our parshad even more delicious!

History

We are continuing with Stone Age topic. Children learnt about historical places such as Stone Age sites, remains and tools in the United Kingdom. One of the places the children have learnt is Skara Brae in Scotland. In this topic, children compare some of the Stone Age dwellings around the world and discussed how climate, resources and natural features can affect the type of houses people built at that time. In this lesson, children also had the opportunity to learnt about how people who lived in Stone Age era improved their living conditions starting from the Palaeolithic era to the Neolithic era.

Maths

Year 3 have been learning to read and interpret graph. First, the children revisited previous learning by practising writing tally. They collected data in groups and represent the numbers correctly using the tally. Once the children are confident to draw the tally, they learnt to construct simple pictogram and bar graph. In this term we also learnt to read and tell the time correctly. Children revisited telling time to the hour, half past, quarter past and quarter to. Children are beginning to tell time using the analogue and digital clock.

Music

Year 3 has been working really hard to follow and play rhythms.

They have followed a mixture of crotchets and quavers, semi quavers and crotchet rests as above using the words ‘TA’ and ‘TE TE’ and ‘TIKA TIKA’ and ‘shh’ to keep in time to a pulse beat.

They have used both body percussion and drums to follow their rhythms.

We have used online rhythm pieces to follow such as ‘Wipe Out’ ‘Angry Birds’ and ‘Minecraft’

Panjabi

In Panjabi, we have carried on learning about Vaisakhi.  We have learnt many new Shabads which we have recited during Gurdwara time and for our main Vaisakhi assembly as well.  We have learnt why Amrit was created and how the birth of the Khalsa is one of the most important times of the year for Sikhs.  We have also learnt the start of a new season, Spring and also falls in line with the new Sikh year and Vaisakhi at the same time.  We have also been learning about names of 5k’s and their importance that why Sikhs wear them.

Physical Education

In PE, we have been learning to play Kabaddi! We have been practicing the skills needed to play the sport by taking part in practice games and drills designed to improve spatial awareness. Kabaddi is a team sport in which you have to score points by invading the other team’s space and tagging a player, then returning to your own side before getting tagged back. Children will be working on quick footwork skills and teamwork to improve their game play.  These skills are transferable to many other team and individual sports and we will be discussing this further in our lessons.

PSHE

In PSHE, we started our Healthy Me topic.  We first looked at why our hearts and lungs are important and how they help keep our bodies moving and why we need to make sure they are healthy at all times.  We then went outside and learnt various different exercises and took part in a fitness circuit.  It was very tiring but we felt great after!  We then looked at the Eat Well guide and considered how we could make better food choices within our diets.  We discussed how it is ok to eat a certain amount of chocolate or crisps but continuously it will be very bad for us in the long term.  Finally, we looked at why getting a minimum of 8-10 hours of sleep is important and how it can have a positive impact on our learning.

Religious Education

In RE, it has all been about learning about the most auspicious occasion for Sikhs – Vaisakhi!  It has been an exciting time leading up to Vaisakhi and are looking forward to celebrating with our families over the Spring break. In class we have been learning about the important facts of Guru Gobind Singh Ji, located Takht Sr Kesgarh Sahib on a map and identified the neighbouring landscapes such as the Himalayas, and also identified the significance of the 5 K’s of the Khalsa.  Within our school, we have experienced the holy Nishan Sahib Seva, Guru Ka Langar and also a school wide assemble where we sang shabads and had delicious parshaad!

Science

This month we have started learning about ‘Our Changing World.’  We first explored why leaves change colour over the year and learnt about the two different types of trees: evergreen and deciduous.  We then discovered how seeds are dispersed and how wind, animals and water help to scatter seeds everywhere.  Within our school grounds we have been on learning walks where we identified the different types of trees and also investigate the signs of seasons changing.  We have also explored the different parts of a flower and how each part plays a different role for pollination.  We will continue with this topic next month.

Sikh Studies
