Art
In Art this month we have been so happy to start our sculptors using recyclable material. We are using the techniques we have learnt from our artists especially twisting and weaving. Our final piece follows our theme ‘Khalsa Cares’. It depicts what is happening to our world should recycling not take place and would happen if we continue to not look after our environment. It is amazing to see what we are able to create using things that would normally be thrown away!
English
We have carried on with our persuasive writing. The children have used various debating lessons to build on their understanding of linking reasons and examples to their opinions and we have explored the OREO structure as an effective framework to express their ideas. The children have been busy drafting their persuasive letters to Mr. Vig on a range of topics from boosting the herb production at school to recycling more resources to encouraging teachers and other staff to reduce their energy usage.
Maths
This month we have been exploring polygons with a focus on triangles and quadrilaterals. Earlier on in the month the children consolidated their knowledge of right, acute and obtuse angles and used this knowledge to learn about triangles. We discovered that the internal angles on all triangles equalled 180degrees and have been using this knowledge to solve problems about triangles. The children continued their exploration of triangles with an exploration of quadrilaterals and learned how to identify different types of quadrilaterals as well as to classify and define ones they were already familiar with.
Music
I have been very proud of the attitude of the students this term as some music restrictions are still in place.
They have continued to internalise pulse beats and rhythms.
We have been fortunate to use the hall where they have been working in groups of 4 to write a 4 bar rhythm using notation.
They then learnt to follow their notation both using body percussion and instruments using a staggered start.
Each group performed their rhythm piece independently without my direction.
In addition, they have worked outside singing ‘Three Lions’ They selected rhythms from the song and created a drumming rhythm piece.
Panjabi
In Year 4 children have been learning 4 sets of Panjabi letters. Children are reading and writing words using these letters they have just learnt. This month they have also been learning how to make simple sentences in Panjabi, some pupils have got on to using adjectives in their sentences. Some children were working on their Mukta word sheets with the help of an alphabet sheet. For speaking and listening children are learning about Time in Panjabi. Children are learning how to say o’clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to. This term they also have been learning about martyrdom of Guru Arjan Dev Ji and main message from Guru ji’s shahidi.
PE
This month we had our Sports Day! Children took part in lots of fun races including Parachute Popcorn, Slalom and 50 metre dash!
There were lots of winners on the day and the fastest sprinters won Bronze, Silver and Gold medals. We also gave away Frisbees and Sponsored water bottles as prizes to children who showed excellent team spirit by cheering their team on and encouraging others!
We also had a visit from our much loved mascot Ladoo and children enjoyed the lovely weather on the day by having a picnic on the field with their friends and teachers.
We hope to see you all at next year’s Sports Day as you were missed this year by all staff and children.
PSHE
Our main focus in PSHE this month has been – all about me. We have played various games to help us understand more about each other and what likes and dislikes we may have. We have also discussed how getting to know each other more has helped with our friendships. We have also looked at ‘PANTS’. We talked in great detail about what PANTS means and ensured we were all happy and confident with what had been discussed
RE
In RE this month we have continued looking at Parables. We understand how a parable is a relatable story but with a meaning. We have discussed what the various meanings of our parable are and also whether we can relate parables to any other type of story. We deliberated as to whether there were any similarities between theses parables and stories from other religions.
Sikh Studies
With great enthusiasm, this month in Sikh Studies the children looked at the life of Siri Guru Har Rai Sahib Ji – the seventh Guru of the Sikhs. We looked closely at his family history discussing his parents, grandparents and also his wife and children. We looked in great detail at His life story. We also looked at the Gurudwara’s connected to Him. Finally, we have been listening to shabads relating to His teachings.
