Curriculum

September 2020

To start the year, we designed our class charter together. We looked at our three school rules – be ready; be safe; be respectful – and collaborated to decide how we would follow these rules in different areas of the school.  For example, we will always be respectful when others are talking: it is important to show that we are listening. We will always be ready with our equipment: it will prepare us for learning.

We then did lots of work surrounding our class bird: the falcon.  In art, first we learnt about the difference between shades, tones, tints and hues and practised changing the intensity of the hue by adding water to the paint. We then changed the shade of the hue by adding black.  We learnt that when using watercolours, you should avoid using white paint and instead leave blank spaces to create light.

Next, we completed drawings of birds by first focusing on the shapes within them and then adding in detail later. We used our new skills to paint colourful pictures of our bird.

In writing, we wanted to create a picture in the reader’s mind; we achieved this by focusing on imagery – similes, metaphors and descriptive language. We looked at images of falcons and also videos from their perspective (bird’s eye view) and wrote poems.

We also looked at the importance of the falcon in Sikhi – Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s baaj was a falcon and we studied a famous of image of him.
