Communication and Language

This term in Reception our children have been looking at and discussing feelings and behaviours within the class. Our children spend time every day where they sit as a whole class and discuss how they feel. These are either positive or negative feelings that they have. The children are able to listen to each other and discuss how to improve on negative behaviour that particular individuals might have. We discuss how our behaviour has an impact on others around us and what impact it has on them. Our Reception children use the feelings cards, behaviour chart and emotions scale when discussing feelings and emotions.

Expressive arts and design

This term our children really enjoyed looking at the story of ‘Pirates love Underpants’. They were able to use a variety of different tools and materials to create their own pirate characters and use them to re-tell the story. They were able to explain how they created their puppets and what was the best tools and materials to use when creating their puppets. Our children were able to say certain phrases from the story when re-telling the story and we really enjoyed changing our voices when re-in-acting the characters from the story ‘Pirates love Underpants’. Amazing creative work Reception !.

This term our children have been learning the skill of holding a sentence. They were able to think of a sentence in their head, count out how many words are within that sentence and use their phonic skills to write down each word within that sentence. We have also encouraged our children to read back and check their writing every time-  a skill that is crucial in writing. Our children enjoyed writing about Pirates this term and loved using the phoneme cards in class to create amazing sentences. Well done Reception!

This term our children have been using number-lines throughout their number work. Our children are able to count up to 20 and backwards using the number-line and can explain what happens to a number when you add one more or one less to a number-line. Our children are able to jump along and jump back on a number-line. They are able to find one more or one less from any number up to 20. Our children are able to also use the dice to count out the number of dots, find that number on the number-line and state what is one more or one less of that given number. Amazing work!

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

What an amazing new Library we have! Our Reception children really enjoyed going into our new library and exploring what different types of books we have. We spoke about how we need to behave in different environments and the importance if respecting the school property. We discussed why we need to be quiet in a Library and how we should leave any environment in a good and clean way. Respect for everything around us, humans and the environment is so important. Well done to Reception for being able to walking to the library and back in a safe and sensible manner without any adult support!

Physical Development

Our Reception children really love going outside and exploring the natural environment. They really enjoy using the mud kitchen to cook and create different types of meals. Some of our children loved to create their own traditional meals in the mud kitchen which was inspired by the Chinese New Year stir-fry done the previous week. They discussed what tools and equipment they were going to use and what they need to do to stay safe in places like the kitchen. Our children created different types of food by moulding, pressing and sculpting wet and dry mud together. Well done Reception such yummy food!

Understanding the World

This term our children really enjoyed dressing up as a cook and baker to create their own meals. They were influenced by the cooking that took place last week with Chinese New Year Stir-fry. They were able to explain what the role of a cook and baker is and the importance of staying safe within the kitchen. They were able to explain different occupations and how they help others in the community. Our children were able to explain how different occupations help to keep the community safe and what their uniform looks like. Well done Reception for sharing your knowledge with others!
