Communication and Language
The children have been learning the story ‘The tiger who came to tea.’ This has been a great story as children were able to identify the different types of foods in the story such as tinned foods, packaged foods, bottled foods and fresh foods. The children had opportunities to explore some of these foods and talked about what they eat at their homes. This was a perfect moment to talk about where our food really comes from. Most children shared their shopping experiences with their parents and know what goes on when out for food shopping. We set up a shop roleplay area to extend these experiences where tills, shopping baskets and real money were added.

Personal, Social, Emotional Development
There were lots of activities to choose from to keep the children active and developing their gross and motor skills. Mr Bath, the PE Teacher has been getting them ready for the Sports day by engaging them in fun races. More and more children have developed well at handling, controlling equipment such as garden tools, balls, skipping ropes, hula hoops, bats and balls, scooters and bicycles. The children have been showing their more increased handling and cutting skills as they have been cutting food pictures from magazines creating their pretend dinners on paper plates. We also saw some beautiful number and letter formation from many children throughout Reception.

Literacy
Through the story ‘The tiger who came to tea.’ the children learned to write food lists for their shopping. The shop roleplay area enabled them to apply their Phonics knowledge. This has been a great story as children were able to identify the different packaged foods in the story such as tinned, bottled, frozen and fresh foods. The children also had a chance to learn a pizza recipe which they used using some of our own grown ingredients. Finally, the children wrote their own version of ‘The tiger who came to tea by changing characters and some events in the story which was good fun.
Maths
The children learned addition by combining two groups and counting the total on a part whole model and counters. They also used the skill of counting on/ adding on where the vocabulary ‘First, Then and Now’ was used. We finished off by investigating number patterns up to 20. First, we had to know our number bonds of ten, then learned how to add on to the special number 10. For example, 10 +1=11, 10+ 5+15 up to 20. We found one more/ one less of numbers between 1 and 20 using number lines. We even learned to count numbers beyond 20 and write some of them.
Understanding the World
The children have been learning about food and where it comes from. We started off by sorting food pictures, sorting it into two groups- food from plant and from animals. Having our allotment patch where we are growing potatoes, tomatoes, strawberries, garlic and other vegetables helped us to understand where some of our food come from. The children found out what other children from other countries eat for their school dinners through watching videos. We made our own pizza, a type of food from Italy where we used some ingredients from our allotment. This was really fun!
Expressive Arts and Design
The children have been learning about food, our indoor roleplay area is now a café. The children have been ‘going out’ ordering different foods from other countries. We saw birthday celebrations taking place and chefs making lots of food for their customers. There has been some writing and reading as the children read out menus and wrote down orders. In the mud kitchen, the children have been using green leaves and grass to make salad dishes to serve each other. From our story, ‘The tiger who came to tea’, the children produced a range of paintings showing their creativity.
