Communication and Language

This term our children have been looking at the topic of celebrations. They enjoyed creating character masks of Guy Fawkes using media of their choice. Our children enjoyed working together to retell the story of Guy Fawkes and why we celebrate bonfire night. The children worked together to think about the story line and used phrases from the story. The key words our children used were: Guy Fawkes, Houses of Parliament, Dungeon, Barrel, Gun Powder and Plotters. Children used the speaking frame to support them when speaking in a sentence.

Expressive arts and design

Our children really enjoyed reading the story ‘Flashing Fire Engines’ as part of their PSED lesson. From this our children wanted to work together to create their own fire engine. We first looked at what a fire engine is made up of where we used the terms, ‘water tank, pump, hose, siren, masks and tanks’. Our children created their own drawing of what a fire engine looks like. After designing their fire engine, they went on to using a variety of recyclable resources to create a 3D fire engine.  Whilst constructing their fire engine, they discussed what resources to use, how they were going to join items together and what colours they were going to use.

Literacy

Our children have done really well with their reading since they started reception. This term our children can not only recognise phoneme sounds, they can write these sounds and are beginning to blend simple CVC words. This term we will continue to work on these skills and we are beginning to find and read red words ‘tricky words’ from a variety of fiction and non-fiction books.

As part of learning about Diwali our children are beginning to read books related to fire safety such as ‘Flashing Fire Engines’.

Mathematics

This term, we will be focussing on applying mathematical language in everyday situations. Our children have been learning about weight where they have been using the vocabulary ‘heavy/heavier/light/lighter’. They really enjoyed exploring a variety of different objects and materials using a balancing scale. We are beginning to learn about prediction and give reason to why we think certain objects are heavy or light. Our children loved the challenge of trying to find objects which made the weighing scale balance.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

This term our children will be looking at a variety of different celebrations from all religions. We have been looking at how people around the world celebrate special occasions such as Guy Fawkes, Diwali, Band Chhor, Hanukah and Christmas. Our children discussed what is similar and different between the way that they celebrate festivals. They also enjoyed talking about different places of worship and what the expectation is when going to these places. E.g. Washing your hands, covering your head, etc.

Physical Development

This term we will be looking at using a variety of mixed media and art tools. This week the children wanted to create ‘Divas’ using clay. They moulded the clay for from different shapes. Once dried the children used fine paint brushes to paint their divas focussing on colour and patterns. Children were encouraged to hold the paint brushes correctly and focus on hand eyed coordination.

Understanding the World

This term as part of the topic ‘Celebrations’ our children really enjoyed exploring and investigating about light and dark. They enjoyed creating shadow puppets using black sugar paper and explored what would happen if they projected light on to the shadow puppets. We really enjoyed going on to Google Earth to name different countries and to further explore how they celebrate different festivals.
