Communication and Language

Our children have been really enjoying reading and listening to the story of Kipper’s birthday. They enjoyed taking part in acting out the story of Kipper’s birthday as a whole class. Our children worked together to create think about how they were going to create a birthday card for Kipper. Our children created birthday cards for Kipper and then spoke to an adult, telling them what they had wrote in their card. We encouraged our children to speak in full sentences when talking about what they have written in their birthday card for Kipper.

Expressive arts and design

Our children really enjoyed making Rangoli patterns with a variety of different media such as coloured stones, paints, pebbles etc. They learnt about patterns, repeated patterns, colours, shapes and symmetry. Our children worked really hard as a team, trying to complete a large piece of Rangoli pattern. They learnt about team work, listening to each and working together. Our children really enjoyed showing their work to others in the class and also were able to explain their patterns in full sentences. We encouraged our children to speak in large groups about sharing their work with others and explain using language such as ‘because’ and ‘and’.

Literacy

Our children have been working really hard with their reading and writing this term They have been looking at segmenting and blending CVC words and have begun to write simple sentences. They have been using a phoneme chart to help with writing their birthday invitations for Kipper’s birthday. Come and have a look at the great writing our children have been doing whilst they have been focusing on the correct letter formation of sounds. Great work Reception and well done for focusing on your sounds and letter formation!

Mathematics

Our children have been working hard with their number work. They have been looking at the number form of numbers from 0 to 20. Our children were able to count up to 20 verbally and were able to name the number form of each of the number forms. Our children were able to order the numbers from 0 to 20 with confidence. Whilst ordering the numbers children were able to state what number comes before and what number comes after a given number. Our children were able to state what is the bigger and smaller number and were encouraged to speak in complete sentences about their chosen number.

Physical Development

Our Reception children have been learning about Remembrance Day. They really enjoyed taking part in the 2 min silence in class and singing a beautiful prayer to remember those special individuals who gave up their life for others. Our children used a variety of creative tools like a paintbrush and scissors to create their own poppies. Our children were able to follow along and around the shape of the poppy when cutting it out carefully. Our children looked closely at the shape and colour of the poppies before creating their own poppies. They loved taking this home to show their family. Well done Reception!

PSED

Wow! Look at how wonderful and yummy cake our children have made for Kipper. Our children worked together to set up a party for Kipper as part of his birthday. They worked together, sharing the items of food and party decorations. They listened to each-other and took on each-others ideas and views about setting up the birthday party. Great work with sharing and caring the school items in class.  Well done Reception for showing how to look after the school items and sharing the objects with others in class!

Understanding the World

During this term, our children have been looking at a variety of different celebrations. They looked in detail at how people celebrate birthday around the world, including their friends and family. They were able to role-play how they would celebrate a birthday party and also what they would make for a birthday party. Children took turns sharing with each other and working together as a team to create a birthday party for a friend or special one. The book they have been reading to support their learning is called Kipper’s birthday. Children drew a lot of their imagination and creativity from personal experience and this core book.
