The aim of this page is to highlight some of the fantastic learning that has been happening in Year 4, this page will be updated monthly, with photographs and information about the learning we have completed during the month.

We hope you enjoy looking through these updates and do discuss your child’s learning with them to celebrate their success. We look forward to any suggestions you may have to make your child’s learning a pleasant experience.

What we have been learning so far:

In Art, we learnt how to annotate and review our completed art. We commented on what we liked most, what we think to improve for next time and commented on what we’ve learnt and what our next step could be. We also had to think about our skills we tried to develop. Also, we continued to refine our collage techniques by completing different pieces of collage by studying the work of our artist, Hannah Hoch, a German artist, as an inspiration to complete our work. We learnt how to arrange our images to ensure that they are overlapping, like in Hannah’s art, to create the perfect collage.

Pupils have had an opportunity to apply and consolidate the skills that they learnt during the term.

They are able to insert and format shapes using texture, pattern and gradient in order to create pictures.

They know how to use the CTRL key to copy and paste shapes easily. They are able to layer, manipulate and resize shapes. They can use the arrow keys to move and position the shapes.

Pupils have also been taught how to use the mouse scroll key or the slider on a laptop to zoom in and out of their work. This has been beneficial in allowing pupils to view a full page whilst working on their pictures.

In English, we have been writing to inform. We linked this to our topic of Vikings and the attack on Lindisfarne, in order to write a newspaper article. We looked at language to create the effect we want to have on the reader by using accurate and precise vocabulary. The five w’s were revised: Why? Where? When? Who? What? We looked at examples of various and similar news articles with careful attention to the headline, writing in the third person, the use of paragraphs and the incorporation of quotes from various eye witnesses to make the news report more believable and true to the actual facts.

In History, we have been learning about the struggle of England and the invasion of various groups like the Vikings and the raids in various places throughout the country. We learnt about the raid at Lindisfarne where the Monks were attacked. We watched some interesting videos and used images artefacts for making inferences during which we discovered that most Vikings really just liked to settle down and to trade their goods. We’ve been learning about Alfred the Great and Athelstan, the first king of all England and Danegeld, the land-tax. We also learnt about the Viking king, King Canute and Harold Hardrada, who lost the battle at Stamford bridge and this was also the end of the Viking era.

This term we have been learning about decimal numbers. We have been learning how to count up and down in tenths and hundredths; recognise that hundredths arise when dividing an object by a 100 and dividing tenths by 10. We also rounded decimals with 1 decimal place to the nearest whole number, compared numbers with the same number of decimal places up to 2 decimal places and solved simple measure and money problems involving fractions and decimals to 2 decimal places.

Year 4 have been learning to sing rounds related to their topic, the Vikings.

The have perfected a variety of rhythm and pulse using djembe drums and have learnt to follow and participate as a conductor.

They have listened to ‘Epic Viking Battle, Music to Valhalla’ and have responded by articulating the instruments, dynamics and changes of dynamics, the tempo, the pitch, the timbre and structure of the music. They then selected instruments that they would use to imitate the sound.

In Panjabi we have been learning about different cultures and how culture is different to religion. We came across and familiarised ourselves with lots of new vocabulary like Charkha, Manja, Ghagra etc. As we are focusing more on Panjabi culture we divided the learning into sub-topics such as Panjabi foods, sports, clothing, celebrations and festivals. Children are showing a great interest in this topic and sharing their knowledge and experiences with the whole class.

Physical Education (P.E.)

This month children are preparing for Sports Day.  We have been practicing for events such as 50m sprint, throwing, egg and spoon race and football dribble.

Children have been learning about the spirit of competition and the Olympics.  They have also been learning about the great efforts professional athletes make to be competitors and the level of hard work and discipline needed to perform at the top level.

We have also focused on the Javelin throw technique and realised that ‘practice makes perfect’!

Personal, Social, Health and Economics (PSHE)

In PSHE this month, we are looking at ‘Healthy me’. In particular, one aspect we looked at was smoking and its effects on our health. As a class we discussed what knowledge we already have and shared new facts. In smaller groups we looked at various scenarios faced by young people in relation to smoking and how these situations could be made better.  We also tried to understand some of the reasons why some people start to smoke.  We discussed the feelings of shame and guilt and how to act assertively to resist pressure from within us and from others.

Religious Education (R.E.)

In RE this month we have continued our study of Judaism. We came across lots of new vocabulary some examples include: Rabbi, Kosher and Tallit. We understood how a Jew showed his commitment to God.  We concentrated on ascertaining lots of interesting fact about the Synagogue in preparation for our forthcoming visit. We now understand what synagogue means. We also discovered that there are three main uses of a synagogue. On our learning journey we came across many Hebrew words which we can now fully explain in English. Finally we fully comprehend the purpose of internal light.

In science, we have been learning about different types of materials and their properties and to classify them in groups according to their properties. We have also learnt about dissolving, solids, liquids and gases.

Through various practical experiments, we explored changes of state, how some changes are reversible while others are not, investigated magnetism and conductivity in metals and non-metals. We have begun to make predictions and justifying them by using scientific concepts that we know about and also to think about independent and dependent variables when conducting our experiments.
