What we have been learning so far this year:

April 2019

What we have been learning so far this year:

Communication and language

We introduced our new topic of Growing this term by reading Jack & the Beanstalk. We recreated this story in a tuff tray for the children to act out. They used small world figures, puppets and furniture to retell the story in their own words. We have found that the children are able to retain and retell the events of stories better by having small world version for them to explore.

Physical Development

Peacock Class have used both their fine motor and gross motor skills to learn and practise how to sow seeds in soil. The children learnt the steps we need to follow in order to grow healthy plants. We used real soil, seeds, cups and water in class and outdoors. The children know that plants help us breathe and are also aware that we need to take care of them by watering them regularly to help them grow.

Literacy

To help the children to retain and retell the story of Jack & the Beanstalk better, we first read the story book, then we watched the story on YouTube and finally we were able to draw a story map together as a class. In addition to this, we used the Pie Corbett style actions to further embed understanding of the story which the children loved joining in with!

Mathematics

As a link to our focus story Jack & the Beanstalk, Peacock class investigated what money is and learnt that we used money in exchange for some goods. We first looked at the colours and pictures on coins, then we looked at the numbers on the coins to learn about how much each coin is worth. We also used beans to find the corresponding quantities to match the numbers on the coins. Peacock Class have continued to explore the use of money by role playing with pretend money in our Florist shop.

Understanding the World

The children were taught the story of Vaisakhi in Punjabi Class. We learnt that Vaisakhi is celebrated each year because it marks the creation of the Khalsa at Anandpur Sahib in 1699, by the 10th Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh Ji. As part of celebrating this very auspicious occasion, the children made Nishan Sahib flags using coloured paper, glue and straws. We then attended a special assembly where we listened to children singing beautiful Shabads

Expressive arts and design

We have been getting very creative in Peacock Class this Spring! We have made many different pieces of our own artwork using various different materials such as real leaves and wool to create beanstalk in clouds collages. In addition to this, we also love role playing in our Home Corner where we cooked up some delicious food for the hungry Giant!
