What we have been learning so far this year:

July 2019

What we have been learning so far:

Communication and Language

Peacock class have been going into their new classrooms for next year to prepare themselves for learning in Reception. They have had time to spend with new friends and teachers so that they have a comfortable and confident start to their new school life in September 2019. The children have been busy talking to new staff and friends about the things they like so that they can continue their interests next year. Our children and parents are now better informed for what the next important year of their educational journey entails…

Physical Development

Peacock class always enjoy a good boogie! They have been dancing at their class parties to celebrate the end of an extremely busy year of growing and learning. They have been very creative in making up their own dance moves and inspiring other friends to join in with them. The children have also become confident using the climbing equipment outdoors as well as improving on their bike riding skills. We encourage the children to take part in lots of outdoor activities in the school holidays to keep on improving on their physical skills.

Literacy

We have been reading all of the story books the children loved learning about from this year. We enjoyed playing characters from stories and using props to support our play. The children will continue to use story maps next year as they have proved to be a fantastic tool for them to remember the sequences of stories. We are very proud that this year’s Peacock Class know all or most of the letters and sounds of the alphabet. They have concentrated everyday to learn how to say and practice writing letters in preparation for Reception.

Mathematics

Peacocks have worked really hard this year to learn their numbers and correct number sequence chanting. The children will continue to practise learning their numbers for the rest of their time in nursery. Peacock Class have learnt lots of new maths concepts including shape naming and recognition of 2D shapes. We had fun hunting to find shapes in our indoor and outdoor environments including square windows and triangular roofs. Most recently Peacock Class looked at comparing heights of animals and themselves!

Understanding the World

Peacock Class have had a real treat this term. To celebrate our topic of ‘Animal Crackers’, Basil and Crew Farm from Maidenhead have kindly visited us with lots of different types animal friends. These animals included ducks, sheep, rabbits and even a furry donkey! The children were given opportunities to handle and feed the animals. They also asked the specialist farm keepers questions about how to care for the different animals. It was lovely to see the children behave with so much care towards our new animal friends in town!

Expressive arts and design

As Peacock Class have been reading and studying different stories and topics, they have created lots of fantastic pieces of artwork to reflect our learning this Summer term. The children’s creations include a very long beanstalk for our Jack and the Beanstalk display, a paper mache caterpillar and most recently an enormous Elmer the patchwork elephant. The children each decorated a square to construct and contribute to our Elmer display. Just like Elmer, each of the squares designed by our children are unique!
