Welcome to Life at KPS for Year Nursery

Mrs Panesar-Dhaliwal warmly welcome you to Nursery.

The aim of this page is to highlight some of the fantastic learning that has been happening in Nursery, this page will be updated monthly, with photographs and information about the learning we have completed during the month.

We hope you enjoy looking through these updates and do discuss your child’s learning with them to celebrate their success. We look forward to any suggestions you may have to make your child’s learning a pleasant experience.

What we have been learning so far this year:

March 2019

What we have been learning so far this year:

Communication and language

This term we began our topic of ‘Helping Hands.’ The children were very lucky to have special guests visiting the school. These guests included a doctor, an optometrist, nurses, dentist and army officers. The children showed respect and listened very well to their educational talks and asked many interesting questions to improve their knowledge of how these people help us in our lives.

The children even acted out scenarios where they pretended to be patients and doctors.

Physical Development

We learnt how different people around the world celebrate the new year.

As part of Chinese New Year celebrations, the children used different types of media to practise and improve on their existing fine and gross motor skills including writing Chinese letters in a calligraphy style and working together to use chopsticks to pick up red coloured noodles; that was very tricky!

In Music, we danced to the rhythm of the dragon with streamers which was really exciting!

We have read so many fantastic books this term based on traditional tales: The Gingerbread Man, Hansel and Gretal and Little Red Hen. These helped us to learn how important it is to help others when they are in need. We all helped each other to mix ingredients and bake some banana bread which was yummy! We also read modern stories such as Farmer Duck which the children had a lot of fun re-enacting.

As part of World Book Day, Nursery came to school in their pyjamas and paired up with some of the older children from the school who read stories with them in our cosy Contemplation Zone.

We have been concentrating on counting and number recognition this term. The children have used flashcards and toys to make learning numbers fun. We are becoming more confident and use numbers in everyday play.

Nursery also learnt about size; they can now group items according to sizes – small and big.

Understanding the World

We had lots of fun experimenting with water beads as part of a science investigation. We first discussed the size of the water beads which were very tiny, then we added water to them and observed how they changed over time. We learnt new words such absorb and expand.

The children loved playing with the water beads once they had expanded fully. They practised their fine motor skills by using the large tweezers to pick them up which was lots of fun.

Expressive arts and design

As always, the children have enjoyed exploring the Sensory Room this term. They can use all their senses to explore the different materials around them including instruments and feely objects. We also use the sensory room as a place to calm down if we are not feeling too great.

As part of our learning of traditional tales, the children experimented with the use of watercolours to recreate artwork from books of the past. We think you will agree; they did a fantastic job!

The children loved baking and decorating  their very own Gingerbread Men, they were very tasty!
