What we have been learning so far this year:

May 2019

What we have been learning so far:

Communication and Language

We have been reading new stories this Summer. As part of our ‘What a Wonderful World’ topic we read Jack and the Beanstalk and the Smartest Giant in Town. This half-term we have a new topic called ‘Animal Crackers’ and we have begun to read the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar. We drew a story map of The Very Hungry Caterpillar as a class to help us remember and retell the story in our own words. We also use puppets, actions and role play resources to act out the story.

Physical Development

Peacock Class always love to get stuck into messy hands on activities! They have enjoyed strengthening their fine motor skills and exploring different textures at the same time by playing with shaving foam. The children had to hunt through the foam to find coins of different amounts. They then had to identify the value of the coins by looking at the numbers and images on them. The children described the shaving foam using words like ‘soft’, ‘squeezy’, ‘fluffy’ and ‘bouncy’.

This year Peacock Class has worked really hard to learn phonic letters and sounds. We have now learnt all the letters and sounds of the alphabet. We are beginning to blend and read cvc words independently this half-term. The children are becoming more and more confident in accessing the reading areas and selecting books of their own choice. We have a good mixture of interest in both fiction and non-fiction books. It has been fantastic to see more boys in the reading areas this term!

We have been learning about 2D shapes and their different names. The children in Peacock Class have been exploring their indoor and outdoor environments to look out for shapes in everyday objects like a square window and a rectangular ruler.

The children also mentioned shapes that they see at home like a triangular samosa!

We further used shapes to create repeated patterns of our own, which we found tricky at first but we got the hang of it very quickly!

Understanding the World

As we have been learning about what money is and investigating coins, we decided to look at the colours and materials that the various coins are made of. Peacock Class used large magnets to help them fish out the real metal money from the toy plastic money. The children were fantastic at this sorting activity. Peacock Class thought it was a lot of fun to see the coins stick to the magnets and they learnt that magnets stick to metal surfaces.

Expressive arts and design

As we have seen a lot of plants and flowers growing recently, Peacock Class have been learning about the famous artist, Vincent van Gogh’s paintings. We studied his popular paintings of sunflowers and then we attempted to recreate one of van Gogh’s sunflower paintings using water colour paints. We used our fine motor skills to use the paint brushes carefully when painting our pictures. Our paintings are now proudly displayed in our creative area, come and take a look at our pieces of art!
