What we have been learning so far:

Communication and Language

The children in Reception went on a school trip to Whipsnade zoo. They were so excited to go on the trip and spoke in detail about what they saw and what their journey was like. The children in Reception were able to talk about what the animals looked like, what are herbivore and carnivore animals and why some animals have camouflage on them.  All the children were able to follow instructions carefully whilst on the trip and were able to really show their listening and understanding skills. All the children in Reception were also able to listen to the different noises that the animals were making and even tried to mimic them. Well done Reception!

Physical Development

The children in Reception were amazing on their trip to the zoo. They were able to use a map to locate the different parts of the zoo and were also able to talk explain the journey they have to take to get to a certain part of the zoo. The children walked around the zoo very sensibly and were aware of the different health and safety rules that came along with them. All the Reception children had a great picnic were they brought lots of healthy food along with them. They were able to explain why these types of food are healthy and also why they are suitable for taking along on a trip.

Mathematics

The Reception children saw so many amazing animals at the zoo. They spoke in detail about the different type of animals and what they looked like. They were able to group animals by pattern and number of legs. They spoke about what animals have more or less legs and other features than others. Reception were really interested to talk in detail about patterns and shapes of animals. Great mathematical observations! The children were also able to count in 2’s whilst singing the song of ‘The animals came in two by two’. Amazing number singing Reception!

Understanding the World

The children in Reception have been looking at the topic of animal crackers this term and as part of their learning went to Whipsnead zoo. They were able to explore a range of different terms such as life cycles, camouflage, habitat, herbivores, carnivores, animal characteristics and animal names. The trip was an amazing opportunity for all the children to really understand what they had been learning in class as their knowledge and understanding of the topic of animal crackers had come to life. They learnt through experience and use of their different senses. Great work Reception!

Expressive arts and design

In Reception the children went to the zoo as part of their school trip. They were so excited to see the different animals at the zoo. They came back to class and drew their favourite animal that they saw at the zoo. They also looked at the different patterns and colours of their chosen animal. They focused on drawing the features of the different animals and to look in detail at the shape of their animal’s body outline. The children focused on holding a pencil correctly and to look at how you use colouring pencils to colour within their outline.
