What we have been learning so far:

Communication and Language

The children in Reception took part in planning and sharing their school production of Jack and The Beanstalk with our parents, family, friends and other children in the school. Our children worked together and were able to re-tell the story of Jack and the beanstalk to a large audience. This was the first time that our children spoke such a large audience. What a great job Reception-  Well done! Our children took turns to speak in the microphone and waited for their turn patiently. They were able to speak clearly and learnt about the skills needed to address a large audience.

Physical Development

As part of our school production of Jack and the Beanstalk, our Reception children took part in singing a variety of different songs related to the story. Our children were able to work in small groups and create their own dance moves which relate to the different songs. The children were great with moving their body in order to imitate characters such as Jack, The Giant, Jack’s mum, the golden hen, harp and even different animals that were at the farm. We really enjoyed moving our body and being different animals especially Daisy the cow! Daisy the cow went moo, moo, moo

Personal, Social, Emotional Development

During the whole creation of The Jack and Beanstalk production, our children learnt a lot of different skills involved with working with each other in small groups, listening to each other, showing respect and understanding towards different ideas and opinions and encouraging others to celebrate the different skills that they have such as dancing, singing, speaking or even artistic skills. Celebration of individuality and our own talents has been the key for our children throughout our Jack and the Beanstalk production. Great job Reception. We are very proud of these skills that you have all shown.

This tern the children in Reception have been learning about the story of Jack and the Beanstalk. Our children were able to retell the story using different props and actions. As part of the production, our children were able to think of their own lines and working together with the support of the teachers, wrote their own scripts and dialogues. Our children were not only able to create their own scripts but also write them down on paper and read them out aloud.  We really enjoyed how our children were able to use a variety of creative language as part of their speaking and writing of the production.

This term in Reception we looked closely at height and measurement. Our children loved to looked at the height similarities and differences between each other and were also able to order themselves from the shortest to the tallest in class. As well as this, our children were also able to dress up as different characters from the story of Jack and the Beanstalk and talk about which character is the tallest and which is the shortest. We further developed this by using the terms ‘shorter than’ and ‘taller than’ when making comparisons between characters from the story. Our children loved singing “I’m the tallest giant in town, you better watch when I’m around”.

Understanding the World

Whilst looking at the topic of Jack and the Beanstalk our children were able to grow their own plants. Our children all brought their own seeds to plant in our garden area outside. They were able to talk about what the process of growing is and the different parts of a plant. We spoke in great depth about looking after the environment and why it is important to look after all living things in the environment. Our Reception children all took care of their own plants during the weeks by watering them from out school water pump. Well done everyone for caring for living things in the environment.

Expressive arts and design

Our children worked so hard on creating amazing props as part of their Jack and Beanstalk production. We used a variety of different media and materials to create our own props. We were amazed at the way our children were able to use these creative tools confidently and to the best of their knowledge. Whilst creating these props, our children talked about colour, shape, size, combining media and materials. They demonstrated team work by working together when encountering a problem and thinking of solutions to solve these problems as a collective group. Well done Reception for great team work!
