What we have been learning so far this year:

Communication and Language

To celebrate Chinese New Year, the children were fully engaged and listening with full concentration as Mr Vig made noodles for all the children. As Mr Vig was preparing the noodles, the children were introduced to new vocabulary such as pak choimang tout and bean sprouts. They also used chopsticks as part of their fine motor skills. The children extended their learning by creating a Chinese restraint in the classroom where they used the vocabulary learnt from Mr Vig.

Physical Development

As part of learning about people who help us, the children in Reception had the Army come in to talk to them about what they do. The children had the opportunity to take part I the Army March where they had to show good posture skills and movement. They learnt the importance of keeping fit and why it is important to have self-discipline in life.

The children also learnt about The Little Red Hen through role-play and creative work. The children learnt the skill of water colours and how to use them correctly when painting characters from the story. Our children looked closely at forming different types of marks and holding painting and creative equipment correctly.

Every week, our parents have the opportunity to come into school and read with their children and other class pupils during reading club. All our parents love to take time out of their busy life to ensure that they also have a positive impact on their child’s learning. Well done parents! We love to see our parents implement what they have learnt from our Phonic workshop in supporting their children.

As part of World Book Day, our parents also came in and read to our children. We enjoyed listening to all the different stories over hot chocolate! Our children also read to other children across the school, including their older siblings.

In Reception, the children have been learning the different ways of counting with objects. They used small objects such as cubes, blocks and pencils to large objects such as wooden blocks and chairs. It is great to see how our children are able to use and apply everyday objects into their maths.

Understanding the World

This term, Reception has been lucky to have people of different occupations come into school and talk about what they do. Our visitors include dentists, doctors, nurses, Army officers, Optometrist, Physiotherapists, Little Kickers and Khalsa Aid. The children were excited to learnt about what different people do as their work and also what our parents do as work. This term has also allowed our children to be more confident is asking unfamiliar people questions and talking with confidence about their interests and wants in life.

Expressive arts and design

Across Reception, our children love to be very creative! Our children created masks using cardboard boxes and were able to describe what 3D shapes they have used.

Our children also love to create and perform in class where they have the opportunity to create songs and use musical instruments such as the guitar to perform to others. We loved seeing out children create and perform a dragon dance as a whole year group independently during Chinese New Year. Amazing performance Reception!
