Shabads for Children

Our pupils have been busy preparing for Guru Nanak’s 550th Gurpurab. The children are learning 5 Shabads which they will be performing during the Gurpurab assembly. Please help your child to practice the Shabads at home by listening to the videos below.

Jis Ke Sir Uoopar too(n) Suaamee (Ang 750)

sabh te vaddaa satigur naanak jin kal raakhee meree
Guru Nanak is the greatest of all; He has saved my honour in this dark age

jis ke sir uoopar too(n) suaamee so dhukh kaisaa paavai
When You stand over our heads, O Lord and Master, how can we suffer in pain?

bol na jaanai maiaa madh maataa maranaa cheet na aavai
The mortal being does not know how to chant Your Name – he is intoxicated with Maya and the thought of death does not even enter his mind.

mere raam rai too(n) sa(n)taa kaa sa(n)t tere
O my Sovereign Lord, You belong to the Saints and the Saints belong to You.

tere sevak kau bhau kichh naahee jam nahee aavai nere || rahaau ||
Your servant is not afraid of anything; the Messenger of Death cannot even approach him.

jo terai ra(n)g raate suaamee tin(h) kaa janam maran dhukh naasaa
Those who are attuned to Your Love, O my Lord and Master, are released from the pains of birth and death.

teree bakhas na meTai koiee satigur kaa dhilaasaa
No one can erase Your Blessings; the True Guru has given me this assurance.

naam dhiaain sukh fal pain aatt pahar aaraadheh
Those who meditate on the Naam, the Name of the Lord, obtain the fruits of peace. Twenty-four hours a day, they worship and adore You.

teree saran terai bharavaasai pa(n)ch dhusaT lai saadheh
In Your Sanctuary, with Your Support, they subdue the five villains.

giaan dhiaan kichh karam na jaanaa saar na jaanaa teree
I know nothing about wisdom, meditation and good deeds; I know nothing about Your excellence.

Mitr Piaaraa Nanak Jee (Ang 963)

mitr piaaraa naanak jee mai chhadd gavaiaa ra(n)g kasu(n)bhai bhulee
I abandoned and lost my Beloved Friend, O Nanak; I was fooled by the transitory colour of the safflower, which fades away.

tau sajan kee mai keem na paudhee hau tudh bin add na lahadhee
I did not know Your value, O my Friend; without You, I am not worth even half a shell

Pragate Nanak Rai (Dasam Bani – Pannaa 54)

Tin bedheean kee kul bikhai pragaTe naanak rai ||
Nanak Rai took birth in the Bedi clan.

Sabh si’khan ko sukh dhe jeh teh bhe sahai ||4||
He brought comfort to all his disciples and helped them at all times

Mitiaa andheraa chandh chariaa (Ang 393)

saadhoo sa(n)g sikhaio naam
In the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, the Naam is learned;

sarab manorath pooran kaam
All desires and tasks are fulfilled.

bujh giee tirasanaa har jaseh aghaane
My thirst has been quenched, and I am satiated with the Lord’s Praise.

jap jap jeevaa saarigapaane
I live by chanting and meditating upon the Lord, the Sustainer of the earth.

karan karaavan saran pariaa
I have entered the Sanctuary of the Creator, the Cause of all causes.

gur parasaadh sahaj ghar paiaa miTiaa a(n)dheraa cha(n)dh chaRiaa || rahaau ||
By Guru’s Grace, I have entered the home of celestial bliss. Darkness is dispelled and
the moon of wisdom has risen.

laal javehar bhare bha(n)ddaar
My treasure-house is overflowing with rubies and jewels;

toT na aavai jap nira(n)kaar
I meditate on the Formless Lord, and so they never run short.

a(n)mirat sabadh peevai jan koi
How rare is that humble being, who drinks in the Ambrosial Nectar of the Word of the Shabad.

Naanak taa kee param gat hoi
O Nanak, they attain the state of highest dignity

Aad Sach Jugaad Sach (Ang 1)

Ik Oankaar sat naam karataa purakh nirabhau niravair akaal moorat ajoonee saibha(n) gur prasaadh
One God, The Name Is Truth, Creative Being, No Fear, No Hatred, Beyond Birth, Self-Existent, By Guru’s Grace

Chant and Meditate

Aadh sach jugaadh sach hai bhee sach naanak hosee bhee sach
True In The Primal Beginning. True Throughout The Ages. True Here And Now, O Nanak, Forever And Ever True.

Sochai soch na hoviee je sochee lakh vaar
Even if one bathes hundreds of thousands of times, the mind does not become cleansed.

Chupai chup na hoviee je lai rahaa liv taar
By remaining silent, inner silence is not obtained, even by remaining lovingly absorbed deep within.

Bhukhiaa bhukh na autaree je ba(n)naa pureeaa bhaar
The hunger of the hungry is not appeased, even by piling up loads of worldly goods.

Sahas siaanapaa lakh hoh ta ik na chalai naal
Hundreds of thousands of clever tricks, but not even one of them will go along with you in the end.

Kiv sachiaaraa hoieeaai kiv kooRai tuTai paal
So how can you become truthful? And how can the veil of falsehood be torn away?

Hukam rajaiee chalanaa naanak likhiaa naal
O Nanak, it is written that you shall obey the Hukam of His Command, and walk in the Way of His Will
